A Contemplative Life

September 11th, 2010

This week I had the honour and pleasure of spending a few hours with the the Cistercian-Trappist monks at the Monastery of Our Lady of Cavalary in Rogersville, New Brunswick. Father Graham Touchie showed me around the monastery and gave me glimpse of the life these monks live there. After a summer spent rushing from one end of New Brunswick to the other, it was an eye-opener to find a place where the pace of life is slowed down and time is actively sought for contemplation and thought. It was also nice to be able to photograph with the Nikon D3S- I didn’t need flash to bring some of the moments to life and so didn’t feel like I was making to many ripples in the calm the permeates the monastery. I would like to just say thank you to Father Touchie for taking the time to let me see and feel a small part of a monk’s life.

Here’s a shot of a herring boat, the one that picks up the herring from the weirs and delivers it across the Bay of Fundy to the Connors Brothers in Blacks Harbour. Great light and a great lens. Ah yes, the lens, well, I didn’t even shoot this shot. Nick, one of the guides on the Quoddy Link out of St. Andrews, did with my Nikon D3S and his Nikon 300 mm f.4 which he kindly lent me to try out. I shot a ton with it. Loved it and with the combination of higher ISOs and low noise on the D3s, this lens makes a great hand holder. Thanks Nick- I ordered mine yesterday.
