I don’t think I see enough sunrises, sunsets for sure and all the golden glow that goes with them, but as a photographer, if you can break out of your sleeping bag in time to catch the sun’s coming, well, there is always a reward- besides, you can always sneak back to your tent later  for a bit of recharging. This shot was taken near the end of February at Mt. Carleton Provincial Park in New Brunswick, Canada. Part of series we were doing for the provincial government and Revolution Strategy. We’d been trying to get something with fishing huts for a winter campaign but this winter was different- to warm, not enough snow and melting ice. Every set of fishing huts we scouted was being pulled off the ice because of the early thaw, but not at Mt. Carleton. While the rest of the province pretended it was spring with the sounds of motorcycles warming up the highways, Mt. Carleton was still frozen in winter’s embrace. It’s a great place in summer. It’s a spectacular place to shoot in winter.

Nothing like 70 km. winds coming straight off the Atlantic at Miscou Island to give a skier some lift. Well, that and a para-sail and a lot of skill to brave the cold and the narrow take off path. But Eric Girard of Club Wind and Kite likes a strong wind and a challenge so once he was in his harness he was ready to fly. Shooting for Revolution Strategy in Saint John and Tourism and Parks in New Brunswick gave me the chance to catch his high flying display. With the wind howling and waves crashing into the shore behind us, it was an intense morning, but a highlight of this winter’s shooting.
