Bay of Chaleur: Ice Fishing
February 21st, 2010
I was out scouting last week with Tourism and Parks and one of the spots we were looking at was on the ice at Masionette Beach- and all the fishing shacks there. Quite the world, all pristine and white on the outside with some brilliantly painted huts, and on the inside another world, the only light coming from the glow of the water, much like looking into the top an aquarium. Smelt are the fish and spearing them is the method. The man who introduced us to this glowing world said he once caught a 150 this way. Quite the accomplishment. Quite the feed.

Plaster Rock Pond Hockey: Ready for the Drop
February 17th, 2010
The World Pond Hockey Tournament in Plaster Rock New Brunswick hosts over a hundred teams from all over North America and from all over the world. It’s a big event, but there are still moments of quiet and the dreams that come from open ice and a hockey stick in hand.

Waiting for Spring
February 7th, 2010
I was up in Loggieville for Matilada Murdoch’s 90th birthday party last week- Matilda is the vibrant fiddler featured in my book Miramichi:River of Character, the lady in the exuberant pose with her bow and fiddle held high after she finished a tune. But before we went to her party, Terry Power and I drove around Escuminac for a look at the frozen harbour and the lobster boats waiting for the spring break up. It was cold. The wind was whipping snow across the road so jumping in and out of the warmth of the truck to snap a photo took a bit of self-motivational speaking, but this boat and the end-of-day light couldn’t be refused.
